    Abstract

Few relationships create such furor than trade agreements between countries. Whether a small group in Belgium tries to stop a trade agreement between Canada and the European Union, or whether both US Presidential candidates promise to 'kill' the 12-nation Transpacific Partnership Agreement: Trade Agreements inflame emotions and cause politicians to become deeply involved in matters of commerce among nations. While New Zealand is proud of having been the first country with a Free Trade agreement with China, other countries fear such agreements as intrusive and dangerous.

Yet, countries that participate actively in global trade flourish - and those who have high borders, decline in wealth and living standards. So, what is it that makes trade agreements successful?

This short symposium will discuss the origin and effect of trade agreements between nations, and make a strong point for a direct connection between growth of national wealth and the ability to both export and import with minimal hurdles.
